The fieldtrip will focus on the most important Permo-Triassic floras from the Dolomites
(UNESCO world heritage) combining the visit to fossiliferous outcrops with visits
of chosen local museums and plant collections. Starting from Padova, the first day
we will visit Sinich/Sinigo where in situ stems are preserved in lake deposits intercalated
between two volcanic eruptions of early Permian age. A short trip to the unique outdoor
museum of Mälten/Meltina shows the impressive dimension of some of the trees during
the late Permian of this area. In the evening we will visit the Museum of Nature
South Tyrol (Bozen/Bolzano) which houses the plant fossils from the most important
localities of the Dolomites, such as Bletterbach (Permian), Kühwiesenkopf/Monte Prà
della Vacca and Piz da Peres (both Anisian) and Prags/Braies and Wengen/La Valle
(Ladinian). The second day includes the visit to the Bletterbach gorge (part of the
UNESCO world heritage of the Dolomites), where sediments of late Permian-Early Triassic
age can be walked through. Afterwards we will visit the museum of the Geoparc Bletterbach.
On the third day we will move to the Seceda, one of the most impressive successions
of upper Permian-Middle Triassic sediments of the Dolomites. From the top of the
mountain we can not only discuss the local geology but also palynological data obtained
from a borehole of this area. The Museum de Gherdeina (town) houses the original
material of the famous conifer Ortiseia as well as interesting Ladinian plants collected
from this area. On the last day we will discuss the Middle-Late Triassic evolution
of the environment and vegetation from two of the main famous Dolomite Passes: Falzarego
and Giau Pass followed by the visit of the Rinaldo Zardini Paleontological Museum
of Cortina before moving back to Padova in the evening.
