Reasearc interests

My research field is micropaleontology and I particularly focus on calcareous nannofossils. This group of fossils consists of small platelets secreted by planktonic calcareous algae. Their fossil remains are routinely used for biostratigraphic and biochronologic aims because they are abundant and widely distributed in the modern as in the past oceans and they have high evolutionary rates. Their most common application is related with the oil exploitation but more recently they have been used to provide paleoenviromental and paleoclimatic information.

In this context,my research is focused on data retrived from marine on-land successions as well as sediments drilled during DSDP, ODP, IODP expeditions: My research activity is devoted to mainly two areas of interest, distinct but in some way complementary:

-The first is focused on the application and implementation of the available biostratigraphic schemes and this is essentially obtained by means of semi-quantitative methodologies that allow for a better evaluation of the reliability, reproducibility and synchroneity of the biohorizons used in the different biozonations. My research activity has focused mainly on the Paleogene though I have been involved in projects investigating different time slices (e.g. Mesozoic and Neogene)

- The second is related to the paleoclimatic, paleoenviromental and paleoceanographic significance of calcareous nannofossils. Within this vast research topic, I have matured a deep interest in the study of climatic variability during the Paleogene with a particular attention to the relationship between geosphere and biosphere, in other words between modifications of the abiotic system and changes of the biotic system.
