Erosion, sedimentation, and landform evolution on Mars

Abstract:

The valley networks observed on Mars record a history of erosion of its surface by rivers. Like valleys on Earth, some of these valleys drained into low-lying basins and formed standing bodies of water, though in martian case, most of these standing bodies of water were in impact craters. Occasionally, sedimentary features such as deltas or alluvial fans are preserved. However, important differences between the geology of Mars and Earth, such as the lack of plate tectonics, led to distinct landform evolution on early Mars. I will discuss these differences, and review the geological evidence for water on early Mars.
